Maggie Hensel Brown

Maggie Hensel-Brown is an Australian artist working predominantly in needle lace. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2014, then opened The Workroom, a small gallery and workspace in Mulubinba/Newcastle, where she worked as director and curator for two years. In 2015, a class in Reticella redirected her practice toward lace making, the same year she first saw a seventeenth-century lace panel that convinced her lace could tell a story as powerfully as any painting. Her own work grew from that discovery, each piece built around a narrative, often drawn from the ordinary and chaotic parts of her own life. She has studied needle lace across England, Italy, the United States, the Netherlands and Australia, and her work now appears in collections both in Australia and the United States.
