Jordan Fleming's Enamora Vase takes its cues from the utilitarian enamelware held in the Powerhouse Collection: the jugs and hot water cans of the early twentieth century whose arms she exaggerates and re-dreams into full sculptural curls. The vase is formed from a single laser-cut sheet of stainless steel that is rolled, welded and finished by hand, then coated in vitreous enamel and fired in Geelong. Fleming intends the Enamora Vase for the kitchen island or the coffee table, holding your weekly bunch of flowers and standing as a sculptural form when empty; the one you keep within reach because it suits most rooms and most flowers. Its three palettes draw on a trio of enamelled belt buckles in the collection, with their waratah, wattle and pittosporum seed pod designs dating from around 1910.
“It's your medium bouquet of flowers, it's your weekly one. I want it to be used every week.” – Jordan Fleming
The beauty of vitreous enamel
Vitreous enamel is glass fused to metal at high temperatures, creating a durable, luminous finish. This vessel is finished in two colours of enamel, with a deliberately thin top layer that recedes slightly at the edges during firing, revealing the dark undercoat beneath. This creates a fine, pinstriped edge that celebrates the nature of the material and the process of making. Like the subtle variations found in ceramics, these details give each piece a distinctive, handcrafted character. The finish tells the story of its making: glass transformed by intense heat into a rich, durable, glossy surface with a depth, luminosity and character that are uniquely its own.
