Front Door Friend III by Olivia Bossy takes its cues from the Lawrence Hargrave Collection held at Powerhouse. The aeronautical inventor's maquettes shape small details in the piece, from the placement of the screws to the slight asymmetry of the hook. A block of solid spotted gum holds a hand-brushed stainless steel dish and a curved steel hook, its grain running pale in some pieces and deep and veined in others, so no two are quite alike. Passed between makers in the Botany workshop where it is fabricated and finished, its brushed surface wears the small variations of every hand that has touched it. By the front door, it collects keys, lolly wrappers, mail and the loose change emptied from pockets at day's end. Produced in an edition of 100 for Powerhouse Made™, it is the largest run Bossy has made, each one a small, particular version of the same idea.

“If it creates a feeling, whatever that is, then the work has achieved something.” – Olivia Bossy

Olivia Bossy

Olivia Bossy is a Swiss-Australian artist and designer based in Sydney, working across furniture, lighting and interiors. She trained and worked as a graphic designer before shifting into interior and object design around 2019. Bossy prefers time in the workshop over finished technical drawings. She likes to let the details shift and evolve as a piece is built, and says the process of making, working alongside the craftspeople who help build each piece, brings her the most satisfaction. Her practice extends across timber, ceramics, glass, fabric and metal, producing one-off and limited-edition objects and interiors.
