Caity Duffus’s Mycelia House transforms the humble mushroom grow kit into a piece of living design. The reusable ceramic vessel brings the growing process into view, allowing oyster mushrooms to emerge through openings in its sculptural terracotta form. Part functional growing system, part organic artwork, it turns growing food at home into a daily ritual of watching, tending and harvesting.

Developed through Powerhouse’s 2024 Carl Nielsen Design Accelerator program and brought to market with Powerhouse Made™, Mycelia House evolved through 17 prototypes as Duffus refined the vessel for home use and small-scale production. Duffus designed the object and the business around it on the logic of fungi themselves, branching, iterating and connecting the way a mycelial network spreads underground. In consultation with mushroom growers at Ruffle Farm and Nick Ritar of Milkwood, the design was developed to house a ready-to-fruit substrate grow bag, supplied by Ruffle Farm, making the process approachable for first-time growers.

Made in Sydney through a combination of ceramic 3D printing and slip casting, each vessel carries subtle traces of its production. Between harvests, Mycelia House sits comfortably on a bench or shelf as a sculptural object in its own right. Once a crop is harvested, fresh substrate can be introduced and the cycle begins again, offering a durable alternative to single-use grow kits and a playful way to explore fungi as a more sustainable way of growing food at home.

A free grow bag voucher is included in every purchase.

“Fungi is the largest living organism on our planet. As humans, there's a lot we can learn from their way of being.” – Caity Duffus

Caity Duffus

Caity Duffus is a Sydney-based designer working across industrial design, ceramics, photography and art direction. Mycelia House began as her honours project in 2020, a home mushroom-growing system built from 3D-printed terracotta, its natural wicking properties creating the humidity oyster mushrooms need to thrive. Developed over five years and made in small batches in her own Sydney studio, the design combines 3D-printing technology with traditional handcraft techniques such as slip casting. Duffus received funding and mentorship through the Powerhouse Carl Nielsen Design Accelerator Program, support that let her buy her own ceramic 3D printer and turn a student project into a production-ready studio practice.
