WEST IS BEST is an exclusive Powerhouse Made™ commission by Gumbaynggirr artist Aretha Brown, created in celebration of Western Sydney. Screenprinted on100% recycled black Permanent Marker Colorplan at 270gsm, the poster brings Brown’s bold graphic language into a collectible work designed to hang framed or unframed at home, in the studio or office.

Known for her distinctive black-and-white imagery. Brown works across mural painting, drawing, screenwriting, performance, and graphic design. Her practice draws on urban landscapes, popular culture and Blak history, and she has cited artists including Keith Haring and Reg Mombassa as influences, particularly their humour, bold graphic language to engage with politics, place and everyday life. In WEST IS BEST, Brown turns her attention to Western Sydney, celebrating its industrial character through factories, power lines and the working suburbs that shaped her own upbringing.

Brown is also the founder of Kiss My Art Collective and has produced large-scale public artworks for cultural institutions and public spaces across Australia and internationally. She previously collaborated with Powerhouse through Blak Powerhouse, bringing that relationship into this new edition created exclusively for Powerhouse.

Aretha Brown

Aretha Brown, a Gumbaynggirr artist based in Naarm/Melbourne, is known for large-scale public murals that champion First Nations history, knowledge and empowerment through truth-telling. In 2019 she founded Kiss My Art Collective, a group of young women and non-binary artists who have since painted more than 65 murals across Australia and internationally. Brown's practice grew out of graffiti and street art in Melbourne's western suburbs, developing into a distinctive monochromatic style drawing on pop art influences from Keith Haring to Jean-Michel Basquiat.
