Sana Incense Holder is part of Tom Fereday's wider Sana series, taking its name from the Korean word for “to live.” Developed with Dr Thea Brejzek, Professor of Spatial Theory at the University of Technology Sydney, the incense holder is kiln-fired in solid cast quartz glass for its optical clarity and comes in a frosted white finish. The Sana series was first exhibited at Powerhouse in Hybrid (2020-21), presented as part of Sydney Design Week. Its arrival at Powerhouse Store brings the project full circle, from exhibition to an object made available to take home. Fereday established his Sydney studio in 2012, working to a principle he calls honest design that celebrates the materials and manufacturing process behind each piece. Sana's objects are sized to the personal zone, 45 to 120 centimetres from the body, following Edward T Hall's theory of proxemics, and built to travel with their owner from room to room and across continents, small enough to hold and heavy enough to feel considered on a shelf or bedside table.

Tom Fereday

Tom Fereday is a designer based in Sydney, working across furniture, product design and lighting. Born in Australia and raised in England, he returned to study industrial design before founding his solo practice in 2012. Fereday has worked with the same group of makers and artisans since he was nineteen, building each piece through ongoing collaboration with them. His work follows a principle he calls honest design, celebrating the materials and manufacturing process behind each piece. His stated goal is to design something for every functional part of a home, with the hope of one day supplying every element of his own.
