Mazer Tea Lamp

Tom Fereday's Mazer Tea Lamp takes its name from the medieval mazer, a large ceremonial drinking bowl, and reinterprets it as an object of light. The solid glass form is created using a five-part mould that imprints an organic texture from the raw casting process. The natural variations inherent to this process are revealed through the soft, refracted glow of the tealight at its centre. Both sculpture and lamp, it is resilient enough to weather the outdoors and delicate enough for late-night ambiance. At a modest 15 centimetres tall, the adaptive design adds warmth to any setting, creating everyday moments of ritual and reflection.

Created by one of 50+ Australian designers commissioned for the built environment of Powerhouse Parramatta, this glass lamp extends Fereday's collaboration with the museum through Powerhouse Made™, celebrating Australian design excellence and supporting local creative industries

“The idea is simple: longevity, and a celebration of material. There is nothing more timeless than glass.” – Tom Fereday

Tom Fereday

Tom Fereday is a designer based in Sydney, working across furniture, product design and lighting. Born in Australia and raised in England, he returned to study industrial design before founding his solo practice in 2012. Fereday has worked with the same group of makers and artisans since he was nineteen, building each piece through ongoing collaboration with them. His work follows a principle he calls honest design, celebrating the materials and manufacturing process behind each piece. His stated goal is to design something for every functional part of a home, with the hope of one day supplying every element of his own.
